Hotel King: Episode 17 Recap

We're back to where the story left off last episode. Jae Wan is taking the news of Roman and Director Baek's relationship much more negatively than Mo Ne. Mo Ne seems rather glad to be told of it, while Jae Wan thinks their revelation came a little too suspiciously late. He tries to corner both mother and son, but Director Baek manages to squash all his questions. Mo Ne also doesn't realise what is going on in Jae Wan's mind because she tries to diffuse the situation. Director Baek turns the whole situation around. She asks Jae Wan if he is on Mo Ne's side, implying that she and Roman are both behind Mo Ne.

Mo Ne vouches for Jae Wan, so the three of them (excluding Roman) head off to a bank. Director Baek reveals 11 diaries Chairman Ah kept over the course of his life in Ciel. Jae Wan remembers a conversation with VP Lee Jung Gu where the VP asked him if he knew what happened to the diaries. But Jae Wan wasn't able to find the diaries. Seems like Director Baek had been faster in getting her hands on the sensitive material. The one catch is, VP says there were 12 diaries. Director Baek only has 11. Mo Ne tries to take one but Director Baek stops her. Attaining the diaries is an incentive for Mo Ne to becomes a proper Chairwoman for Ciel. Jae Wan doesn't buy her words.

Jae Wan gets a call from the police station. He meets VP who grumbles about two of the directors who were always at his beck and call but now ignoring him. VP tries to get Jae Wan to release him from prison but Jae Wan isn't swayed. VP even tries to say he's not Jae Wan's dad but Jae Wan retells the little story VP had fed Jae Wan about his mother. He now realises the man in the story isn't Chairman Ah like how VP had said, but it was VP himself. Jae Wan gives him the DNA test. VP doesn't read it and tears it. Finally, VP's smiling facade breaks away and he blurts out that it was all Jae Wan's mom's fault, that his mother had said there's no way she'd have his child.

We're sent back into the past to see the relationship between Chairman Ah and VP. Chairman Ah obviously thought of VP as his true friend, but Chairman Ah's family's servant's son was Lee Jung Gu. So the family didn't approve of Chairman Ah mixing with Lee Jung Gu. It seems from the time they were young adults, Lee Jung Gu has always hated Chairman Ah because he never had anything Chairman Ah had. His only goal is to take everything that belongs to Chairman Ah.

Back in Ciel, two of the directors (probably the ones ignoring VP's calls) who were the right and left hands of VP present Mo Ne with expensive designer products. They cover it up as birthday presents for her, but Mo Ne doesn't buy their fake loyalty. She tells Cha Soo An to use the presents as rewards for some staff thing. Mo Ne orders the directors to clean up all traces of VP. Mo Ne also gets a call from Jae Wan at the same time.

Honestly, I dunno why is it Jae Wan calls Mo Ne out but she's the one who's doing most of the talking. Mo Ne tells Jae Wan that she doesn't mind what kind of person he is ... the usual stuff. And she asks Jae Wan is there's anything else he needs to tell her. Hell, yeah, there's loads of stuff. But he looks down and shakes his head slowly. Way to go, continue lying and it'll get you the lady in the end. Mo Ne believes him as usual and seems happy with how things currently are. She doesn't suggest anything about getting back together but only wants him to be by her side as Ciel's General Manager why she makes her way to the path of becoming the real Chairwoman.

In the meantime, Director Baek has something up sleeves. She orders her mysterious lacky to cancel 60% of the reservations made for a Hallyu star's upcoming concert in Ciel. The next day, Mo Ne receives the news of the cancellations from Soo An. She seeks Jae Wan and says she'll personally request Chae Kyung to help her get in contact with the Hallyu star since the star's dad is the CEO of one of the companies under Chae Kyung (the family she married into). Mo Ne visits Chae Kyung in her office (which looks much nicer than the other offices in Ciel). Chae Kyung agrees to help Mo Ne trace where the Hallyu star is but won't do anything more than that. Mo Ne says she'll give Chae Kyung VIP tickets to the concert as thanks. Seems like Chae Kyung can't bring herself to hate Mo Ne.

VP's lacky/chauffeur/spy delivers a handwritten note from VP. He tells Mo Ne he will be seeing the prosecutor soon and he might just also include Jae Wan in his confession of his crimes. Mo Ne orders the lacky to leave and tells Soo An not to let anyone without prior appointment enter her room. Chae Kyung calls with information on the Hallyu star - he's playing golf near Ciel.

Mo Ne waits outside the hotel, probably hoping he'll drop by. Instead, Director Baek comes up in a golf cart and tells Mo Ne to hop on. At the golf area, the Hallyu star shoots a ball into the pond, which is picked up by Director Baek. He's greeted by Mo Ne. Later, he adjourns for lunch in Ciel, and wishes to be served macarons from France. Director Baek comes in, all dressed as a chef, and serves macarons, with Mo Ne looking on. He's surprised to see both of them and asks why they're following him. He rudely interrupts Mo Ne but Director Baek puts a stop to his nonsense. She requests for Mo Ne to leave and goes on her knees. Only to take a newspaper on which she had place a papparazi picture of the star and his lover. She threatens to leak the real reason how he gained his popularity if he doesn't agree to perform in Ciel.

Mo Ne is clueless, of course, and thinks Director Baek just did a sincere request by going down on her knees. She praises Director Baek in front of Soo An and Jae Wan. Jae Wan isn't fooled and doesn't think its a coincidence Director Baek appeared in front of Mo Ne to help her today. Mo Ne gets a call from the police station and is put through to VP. He repeats his threats again and she finally decides to see him. Jae Wan and Soo An are both anxious and confused as to why she runs off without saying much.

VP reveals his relationship with Jae Wan by showing a really worn out DNA result to Mo Ne. VP also shows the little thumbdrive Jae Wan gave him containing Chairman Ah's last message to Mo Ne. Mo Ne can't take the shock and wishes to be rid of both of them. She drives to the harbour and ponders over the times Jae Wan had lied about not finding anything in the boat, when he admitted to being the one who did VP's dirty work, and when he saved her in the bird room. She clutches her chest and vows to never forgive Jae Wan again or she's not being her dad's daughter.

In Ciel, Jae Wan and the other team leaders are having a meeting about the preparations for the guest rooms for the star's concert. Mo Ne listens to their discussion outside before entering. She snaps at Jae Wan and gives instructions to the staff on how to prepare the guests rooms. The team leaders are impressed by her but don't understand why she's so cold. Jae Wan doesn't understand either and runs out after her to ask what's wrong. She doesn't tell him, but just says she wants to concentrate on her work.

One of the workers who's involved in preparing the concert hall shows Jae Wan a device he found in the speakers. Jae Wan realises that's how Director Baek has been bugging Ciel. He heads off to VP's office and find one under the desk. He goes to his office and finds one under his desk too. He's super pissed.

Director Baek is listening to Roman play the piano for her. His choice of piece sounds much more contemporary compared to what she usually plays. They have a heart-to-heart on their feelings for each other. If only Director Baek knew Jae Wan was her son. Jae Wan charges straight to the employees building and bumps into Roman. Roman lies that his mother is not in her office. Jae Wan is suspicious of Roman, still, and Roman doesn't like that.

Jae Wan decides to let Director Baek know he's aware of what she does. He pretends to be talking to someone over the phone regarding Roman but it's actually just Chae Kyung on the other end, going along with his plans. He ends the call and says aloud to the little bug in his hand that he will see Director Baek at 7 p.m. Director Baek grabs her headphones and throws them onto her table. She's shocked, of course, and stalks out of her office. It's almost 7 p.m.

In the meantime, Mo Ne finds out Woo Hyun is the son of the farm Chairman. She's annoyed at not being aware of so many things and doesn't get why Ciel is filled with lies. She confronts Woo Hyun, who tries to explain why he didn't tell her but she doesn't want to hear, lumping him and Jae Wan together.

Jae Wan's seated in Haemil, waiting for Director Baek. She walks in a few minutes after 7p.m. and sits on the chair directly behind him. They don't say anything and then she gets up to leave. Jae Wan decides to intercept her than and they both engage in a word play. Jae Wan ends off by telling her he'll definitely catch her.

The next day, Woo Hyun is waiting outside Mo Ne's house. He apologises and forces his explanation on her. She realises he never wanted to hurt her but gives him a kick as a punishment and walks off. Woo Hyun runs off first so that he can change and be ready for work before she arrives. Jae Wan just walked out of his house to see Mo Ne pass by. He gets a call from VP who lets him know that Mo Ne released him from prison.

VP is currently being driven by Roman, who brings him to Director Baek on top of a rainy hill. VP learns of their mother-and-son relationship and goes on his knees to beg Director Baek to save him. I feel as if she might just say "You insect" at any moment with the way she's looking at him.

Jae Wan drives to Ciel and stops abruptly next to Mo Ne and team leaders. Jae Wan jumps out of the car and yells at Mo Ne, asking her if she's crazy and what the heck she just did. She dismisses the team leaders and tells Jae Wan they should go somewhere else if he can't keep his voice down. They drive to the beach and Jae Wan roughly pulls Mo Ne further to the sea. Okay, being at the beach is good enough but what's with that extra skinship moment? :P I'm not complaining though.

Mo Ne reveals her knowledge of Jae Wan being VP's son. Jae Wan is shaken to hear Mo Ne's opinion on the events that went on. He says that's not what it is. But he can't give her the truth either because he doesn't know where to start. All the stuff he has to tell her, he says it in his head. Good job, Jae Wan. Mo Ne takes his silence as his inability to give excuses for his actions or to defend himself. She tells him not to meet her again and fires him. Jae Wan watches her go back with a defeated look.

-----------------

I must say I felt this episode went pretty fast. It moved from one day to another and the events were happening so quickly. My favourite comedy relief people were hardly even present in this episode. There was only a short moment when Manager Jang was talking to Concierge Go and Woo Hyun. Other than that, this episode for full of dark stuff and emotions. What happened to the comedy relief? I don't want the comedy to disappear completely. Even if the tone of the story is becoming more serious, the rest of the staff are still going about their daily lives. There need to be a juxtaposition between Mo Ne and Jae Wan's issues and the rest of Ciel.

Jae Wan is very bad at showing his emotions. He finally burst out in anger at Mo Ne, which is how a normal person would. I hope he continues to express how he feels about everything. That poker face and neutral façade won't get him anywhere, especially with Mo Ne. She wants to know everything about him but I can't understand why he doesn't just spill everything already. He is still madly in love with her but he doesn't want to unburden himself. All he's doing is making her distrust him more. Instead, he tells Chae Kyung about his feelings after that little meeting with Director Baek. Really, Chae Kyung isn't going to deliver his thoughts and feelings to Mo Ne. -facepalm-

I'm not sure if Director Baek is trying to make herself into Mo Ne's enemy or trying to create a false sense of trust in Mo Ne. The one who orchestrated the cancellation of reservations was Director Baek, but then she threatened the star into performing at Ciel. I get a feeling she did it because she wants Mo Ne to actually do some work for the hotel on her own without relying on anyone else. It just makes Director Baek scarier than before. No wonder she isn't afraid to come up with her own plans because she has her son's money.

Regarding Chairman Ah's diaries, I wonder if he hid the twelfth diary somewhere for Mo Ne to find. The last diary he wrote in would be the one in which he would have listed his fears and suspicions, as well as his distrust of VP and Jae Wan. He might have also written about Jae Wan claiming to be his son. I hope Director Baek isn't hiding the diary and Mo Ne actually finds it. There are way too many secrets for Mo Ne to find, and she doesn't seem to be able to find them fast enough.

I first heard this song a long time ago. It has crept into my head now and then and the only thing I remember was "asayake" and ...
