The episode picks up from the last scene when Lee Jung Gu's true character is revealed to the world. Jae Wan makes sure that all the reporters write about the fiasco, and Soo An is pretty supportive of Jae Wan's actions. I'm guessing, out of Jae Wan's hoobaes, only Soo An knows what's really going on between Jae Wan and the VP since Jae Wan didn't tell Yoo Joon Sung (Alex's character) about his real intentions. Chae Kyung is another person who knows about it since she used her connections in the media industry to make sure the event gets written about exactly as it happened.
Chae Kyung also warns Jae Wan to be careful around her. I initially thought her little challenge to Mo Ne about claiming Jae Wan was all just to give her a little push, but maybe Chae Kyung still wants to try comforting Jae Wan's bruised heart. A little odd after being friend-zoned. I can totally understand it if she's also trying to get Jae Wan to move a bit quicker and return to Mo Ne since what Chae Kyung wants is for Jae Wan to be happy. If Mo Ne is the answer to it, she's fine with it, too, or so she claims. I find Chae Kyung's position still vague. She's always on Jae Wan's side, like a sort of safety net for Jae Wan in case he ever comes tumbling down. She's forever amused by Mo Ne's child-like behaviour. But I doubt her amusement will last long once Jae Wan and Mo Ne are firmly together forever. Will she end up with someone? That's probably the answer I'm looking for. So far, there are no other male figures that predominantly occupy her mind. Since the drama is only halfway through, I guess there's always time for another guy to come along and heal her heart. However, considering how she's now treated like a minor figure who appears now and then to remind us of a love triangle (or polygon), I am a little doubtful about the writer giving her a good ending, too.
Another character who's long-term presence is still unverified is Roman Lee. He's really a mother's boy, but I wouldn't blame him since Baek Mi Nyeo rescued him from his horrible childhood (if we're going by the fact he's that little boy Jae Wan knew as a kid). I wonder if Director Baek has always been slowly manoeuvring Roman's life, telling him what to do and how to accomplish things in that same nasty way of her's. I shall call it nasty since I don't look upon Director Baek kindly anymore. Roman is pretty captivated by Mo Ne. He's been won over by her sincerity and I wonder if this would lead to anything further. Of course there wouldn't be a script change where Mo Ne will end up with Roman. No, no. But maybe something in Roman will force him to go against his mother when he realises why Mo Ne is in love with Jae Wan. And when he finds out it was Jae Wan who saved him as a kid. It will be awesome if Roman will step out from his mother's shadows and fight for what's right instead of just being the pawn in an elaborate set-up.
Who ever knew Director Baek had such deep secrets? The way she whipped around to stare at Lee Jung Gu's retreating back was so scary. As if she's always keeping an eye on him and he'll never escape. I guess it's been confirmed now that Baek Mi Nyeo is Baek Mi Yeon (the younger version as seen in the shot below). Director Baek's flashbacks into the past give us a glimpse of the love triangle between herself, Chairman Ah and Lee Jung Gu. It's not clear how they met each other, but all three were colleagues. Lee Jung Gu was madly in love with Mi Yeon/Mi Nyeo, but she was in love with Chairman Ah who didn't love her back. It seems Chairman Ah wasn't as great as he seemed in Mo Ne's memory of him, and Woo Hyun's regard for him. To summarise (not in a chronological order), Mi Yeon gave birth to a baby which she claimed wasn't Jung Gu's (and so Jung Gu assumed it was Chairman Ah's since that was the man Mi Yeon loved) and she was also accused of embezzling the hotel money so she went to Chairman Ah for help, but he turned her over to the police.
I wonder if Chairman Ah ever recognised or knew Baek Mi Nyeo's real identity. She was apparently of much help to him in Ciel's development. But was she there all along, just watching Lee Jung Gu plan Chairman Ah's death without lifting a finger to warn Chairman Ah? As we have seen before, she has her private area where she listens to whatever is going on in the hotel. Surely, she would've gathered enough information to know what Lee Jung Gu was planning. I guess she never tried preventing his death to seek revenge for what he had done to her. I'm also under the impression she might have met with an accident after being arrested by the police and escaped, to emerge much later with an altered face and that big scar on her back as a mark of her accident. When Jung Gu received the news of her death, he knew she had a child and probably dropped the baby off at the orphanage since he can't take care of the baby, especially if it's not his. He probably didn't even tell Chairman Ah about the baby as he might be holding a grudge against Chairman Ah for turning Mi Yeon over to the police.
Had Lee Jung Gu frame her for the embezzlement back then? But it is kinda sick to frame the one you're madly in love with, right? I'm also guessing VP's revenge against Chairman Ah started on the day Mi Yeon was arrested. Murdering Chairman Ah, stealing Ciel and ruining the glorious vision of the Culture Park were all part of his revenge plans. I don't think he ever intended to hurt Mo Ne. He wanted her to stay out of the way and carry on with life in the US, but since Mo Ne threw herself into the battle against him, he doesn't have a choice but to try and take her down, too. I'm also a little suspicious whether VP ever thought of Chairman Ah as a real friend. Or was he always jealous of Chairman Ah, the man who founded Ciel and was the object of Mi Yeon's affections?
I believe the reason why Director Baek always says not to trust anyone is because of her past experience. She trusted Chairman Ah would believe her but he didn't. So her love for Chairman Ah also died the day he turned her over to the police. Jung Gu also didn't trust her either. It's no wonder she keeps telling Mo Ne to give up on Jae Wan because she thinks love and work cannot mesh well together, and true love doesn't exist.
This whole believe of hers is juxtaposed against the bird scene and the dinner scene. Jae Wan comforts Mo Ne and helps her get over her fear of birds. His soothing voice helps her recited positive ideas about birds and Mo Ne eventually gathers enough courage to look at birds in the eye and even sets them free. I found it a little too quick for someone to get over a phobia but I guess a drama has tight schedules :P It was a beautiful scene, I must say, when they were sitting so close together with his arm protectively over her shoulders. Much later, Mo Ne leaves dinner for Jae Wan in his house, handmade without anyone's help. As Jae Wan ate the food, I wondered what was the reason he started tearing up. One thing was clear though. Mo Ne trusted Jae Wan wouldn't harm her, and he trusted Mo Ne wouldn't poison his food and ate it like a good boy.
One big question I have is why Director Baek has to target Jae Wan. What did he ever do to her? I'm guessing a possible major climatic scene would be Director Baek coming to learn that Jae Wan is actually her son, flesh and blood, but she's already put some plans in place for his downfall.
