The episode starts off with Ji Yoon wondering why Seok Joo will not even consider taking the pro bono case. Sang Tae comes along and helps her with the steps to a jail interview. She goes off to the jail to interview the boy, who remains resolutely silent. The only thing he does each time Ji Yoon asks him a question (with a voiceover of Sang Tae's tips for Ji Yoon) is to flick his fingernail. A bit strange, isn't it? Ji Yoon manages to get him talking a bit about his bike but she can't get any further. The boy seems content to stay in jail and live the rest of his life there.
After the interview, Ji Yoon is busy writing and reviewing her notes. She's about to call Seok Joo to ask his advice but stops. He's probably not going to help her, right? It's nice to see Ji Yoon takes Seok Joo's advice seriously but doesn't want to listen to him about dropping the pro bono case. Well, I guess she has to be responsible for it if she wants to dive head into it.
Meanwhile, Seok Joo is at the vet's. He reunites with Khan, and keeps stroking and ruffling the dog with much love and care. Looks like we've got one dog lover here! I wonder how he treated his dog before he had his accident.
Ji Yoon and Seok Joo run into each other in the office. Seok Joo is amazed she's still onto the pro bono case and she puts her case forth to him strongly. He's taken aback by her enthusiasm and dedication to it. He even suggests she should take the case since she's so involved in it. I guess that was all it took for Ji Yoon to up her dedication from 99% to 100%. After Seok Joo moves away, Sang Tae comes by to talk a bit about Seok Joo's dating history. Sang Tae is really the only person who's light-hearted in the law firm!
Dinner time with the fiancee. I wonder why they even bother dining together. What can you talk about? It looks to me Jung Sun is trying to plan the best way to capture Seok Joo to her side. Seok Joo notices the engagement ring and asks her about it. She says she chose it and he paid for it. He compliments her taste and she says it's the same thing he said back then. We're given a flashback to the actual scene when he 'proposed' to her. What a lackluster proposal! It's obvious enough, though, that Jung Sun had lied about the ring and the extent of love Seok Joo had for her. It's obvious enough Seok Joo never loved her but was just marrying her for the sake of doing so, implying he has no feelings for her but they will develop while being married to her. I'm thinking of the kind of "care" that you'd have towards someone you live with for a long time.
Seok Joo is driven home, again, by Jung Sun. She advices him not to drive as it may endanger him. He's appreciative of her concern, of course. Jung Sun experienced a heart-thumping moment when Seok Joo told her that her fragrance is familiar. How slyly romantic is that? :P And ... what do we have? Ji Yoon is pacing the balcony, while reading her notes, waiting for Seok Joo to come home. The moment she sees the car and Seok Joo sending Jung Sun off, she runs back into her house. Seok Joo walks towards the apartment building and glances up. No Ji Yoon waiting.
The next day at work, Ji Yoon scuttles away from Seok Joo when he enters the firm. She quickly thanks Sang Tae for his help and gets called over by Seok Joo. She makes a quick excuse about her appointments and runs out. Obvious reason: she left the pro bono case notes on Seok Joo's desk. Seok Joo flips through them once more then casts them aside. He takes the notes on the Yurim case and is busily looking through them. Cha Young Woo gets a call from Yurim's president about the meeting in the afternoon. Young Woo goes over to Seok Joo's office to offer a quick filler on what's been happening so far. Seok Joo's quite shocked his suggestion (before his accident) had cause so much problem for Yurim. They go into the meeting with the executives and Seok Joo draws a line at the responsibility he will take for the case. He refuses to help them any further.
Ji Yoon is busy interviewing the people who live near the boy and one of his friends. She talks to the youth centre lady and wonders what else she can do to lower his sentence. Back near the law firm, Ji Yoon almost trips over a small step (while busy writing in her notebook). Ji Won calls out to her in time and she regains her footing. She's wearing oxford shoes; I guess they're more practical for walking around compared to those killer heels. Ji Won chats with her for a bit and Ji Yoon gets a brilliant idea to seek his opinion on the case. They sit at a bench and he gives her as much advice as he can, even suggesting she should ask for a jury to be present in the trial. Ji Yoon is absolutely pleased with Ji Won's help and suggestion.
Ji Won meets with Cha Young Woo to confirm his employment with Young Woo. Even though it isn't implicitly stated, he agreed to Young Woo's offer. The main reason would be greed I think. He realises that he will take over Seok Joo's position as an ace lawyer. That means heaps of money. Not only that, Young Woo even agreed to help guarantee Ji Won a position as Chief Justice in court after 15 years of working as a lawyer. What a cunning move, Young Woo! You know exactly how to snare someone like Ji Won.
Ji Yoon and her aunt go to Ji Yoon's brother's (Ji Hyuk) audition. Everyone's playing those drums because of a trend Ji Hyuk started. Ji Hyuk manages to pass the audition. He is a little startled to see Ji Yoon. Ji Yoon, however, is busy searching for someone. Her eyes fall on a man in a suit, who turns out to be none other than Sang Tae. Sang Tae is nervous for his audition but manages to pass it. Wow, I never knew he could change into so many outfits. His efforts weren't bad, though, for a lawyer. Ji Hyuk helps Ji Yoon locate the guy who has Seok Joo's watch. She manages to get it back from him (with Sang Tae's help) but accusing him of embezzlement and fraud. Sang Tae eyes Ji Yoon wearily when she asks him to keep the watch a secret.
Seok Joo visits his dad in the hospital. He doesn't manage to get much information out of the doctor. Seems like the doctor will only verify what Seok Joo knows but doesn't give any extra details. Seok Joo's dad is still disturbed by his son's attention towards him. He still plays the indifferent dad but tries to get something out of Seok Joo by inquiring after Seok Joo's health. Seok Joo doesn't say anything about his amnesia. Dad doesn't know what to think of Seok Joo's change in attitude. After Seok Joo leaves, much later, the doctor comes in to persuade Dad to inform his family members about his amnesia. Dad says he'll take care of it but it's obvious he isn't ready to tell anyone. He keeps a diary, writing all the details that happened. Including the fact Seok Joo visited him.
Ji Yoon's dad has come to Seoul for some labor union thing-o and they're all having a barbeque in her house. It's a pretty cool contrast between lonely Seok Joo (in a dark house) next door and a vibrant, warm family. Seok Joo also declined Ji Yoon's aunt's offer of joining them.
Next day at the office, Sang Tae barges into Seok Joo's room to ask him about random stuff. He keeps testing Seok Joo's memory about important events (like Sang Tae's two previous weddings). Seok Joo is a bit unnerved when Sang Tae almost manages to corner him. He's saved when he's called for a meeting with Yurim. Dear Seok Joo, when are you going to tell your best friend about your condition?
Later, Seok Joo leaves his office to meet Jung Sun. He gets stopped by Sang Tae on his way out. Sang Tae mentions how he bought the engagement ring for Seok Joo but Seok Joo says what Jung Sun told him. Uh oh, Sang Tae knows something's not right at all. For one last test, he tells Seok Joo to meet him at their "usual" place. Usual place? ... okay.
Jung Sun is a little disappointed Seok Joo can't take the Yurim case but she doesn't seem to blame him since he met with an accident. Seok Joo is just really naive about everything. It pains me to watch him being decieved by Jung Sun.
Seok Joo is prepared to meet Sang Tae at night but he doesn't know where the usual place is. He tries asking the secretary but she can't help him. He gives up and calls Sang Tae. As the two sit next to each other, drinking slowly, Sang Tae asks Seok Joo if he doesn't have anything to tell. Seok Joo doesn't really say anything so Sang Tae tells him about passing the audition. Sang Tae asks Seok Joo once more and finally, Seok Joo admits. Sang Tae is very shocked at the truth. Memory loss from stress, acceptable. Dissociative amnesia ... wow. Sang Tae realises it's true when he thinks back to Seok Joo's weirdness. He likes a more smiling Seok Joo, though. Sang Tae also helps Seok Joo understand the type of person he was. But he holds back the crucial bit of Seok Joo's former 'relationship' with Ji Yoon.
It's the day for the pro bono case trial. Seok Joo and Sang Tae are standing at the back, looking on Ji Yoon's first case. Ji Yoon is granted permission to defend the boy. The prosecution and Ji Yoon's side put forth their evidence convincingly. However, Ji Yoon manages to sway the emotions of the jury, especially when a single tear slides out from the boy's eyes. She's on a roll, talking about why a father would even want to confess to his wife's murder when he has a alibi and notices the boy's shaking hands. Then she realises. He isn't innocent at all. Seok Joo later reveals to Ji Yoon he had his suspicions all along, which was why he didn't want to take the case. Ji Yoon is really shaken and upset, not able to believe she ended up letting a murderer get away with a life sentence and serving only 5 years in jail instead.
